About AL-1 Airborne Laser B747-400F (1:400)
AL-1 Airborne Laser (1:400) by Dragon Wings
The Boeing 747 is an immediately recognizable aircraft, but one of its most unusual incarnations must surely be that of an airborne laser testbed. Going under the nomenclature AL-1, this Boeing 747-400F features a chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) mounted inside the fuselage. This laser, whose six modules weighs in at around 18,000kg, is designed to shoot down tactical ballistic missiles. For this task, it's assisted by two target illuminator lasers that track the target. Since the program was initiated in 1996, AL-1 has successfully targeted missiles, the first occasion being in February 2010. However, after USD5.2 billion had been spent on the project, the US Air Force (USAF) conceded the AL-1 does not reflect something that is operationally viable.
The Dragon Warbirds model of this airborne laser aircraft is built precisely to 1/400 scale, and it accurately depicts the prototype that first flew in 2002. The aircraft carries the requisite USAF markings, as well as the massive nose-mounted turret housing the laser. AL-1 is assigned to the 417th Flight Test Squadron Airborne Laser Combined Test Force based at Edwards Air Force Base. While the aircraft seems destined never to become operational, Warbirds brings it to life with pinpoint accuracy in miniature scale!

About this scale
1/400 scale die cast airliner models are the most popular commercial airplane model scale. The combination of a huge selection, great detail, and reasonable pricing makes this a perfect sale for collectors. At www.TheAirplaneCollection.com we have been a top selling store for 1:400 diecast airliner and military aircraft since 1999. GeminiJets had just started the year before with the this whole new scale, just a bit larger then the popular 1:500 scale Herpa Wings Models this little bit extra allowed for increased detail especially for the landing gear. GeminiJets also are fully metal models with the wings and tail diecast as well as the fuselage. Herpa Model, followed by Dragon Wings did a metal fuselage, but plastic wings and tail fins. GeminiJets raised the bar in other ways as well. Their colors and manufacturer blueprint designed molds are extremely accurate to their full size counterparts. With GeminiJets leading the way other brands have followed suit with die cast metal 1:400 scale models: AeroClassics (specializing in retro models and latin classics), Apollo, Aurora, Aviation 400, Big Bird, Byrd Models, Dragon Wings, Gemini MACS, Herpa, Hogan Wings, InFlight 400, JC Wings, Jet X, NG Models, Phoenix, and Witty Wings.
